NEW YORK, NY – June 29, 2023 – Vibrant Emotional Health is disheartened that the United States Supreme Court (SCOTUS) ruled against affirmative action in higher education. As one of the nation’s leading mental health organizations, we know firsthand that underserved and highly marginalized communities, specifically communities of color, lack equal access to opportunities.
Affirmative action has played a crucial role in promoting diversity within educational institutions. By considering race and other factors, colleges and universities have aimed to create inclusive environments that reflect the diverse fabric of our society. This diversity enriches classroom discussions, fosters critical thinking, and prepares students for the complexities of an increasingly diverse world.
Rather than dismantling affirmative action, investing in expanding access to quality education in underrepresented communities is essential. The decision by SCOTUS to end affirmative action in higher education is a step backward in our collective pursuit of equality, equity, and social justice.
Education shapes lives and is important in lifting people out of poverty and reducing socioeconomic inequalities. At Vibrant, we know that lack of education is strongly correlated to poorer mental health outcomes, and we are dedicated to ensuring that youth and young adults have supportive educational programs, mental health support, and training that will sustain them throughout adulthood.
As advocates for equal opportunity, we must rally together to embrace diversity, amplify marginalized voices, and work towards a more equitable society where all individuals have a fair chance to access and succeed in higher education.
