‘Raise the Age’ Is Law

Governor Andrew Cuomo signed ‘Raise the Age’ legislation into law on Monday. This means that young people who commit non-violent crimes will no longer be processed as adults in the criminal justice system. Instead, they will receive the help they need.

Our Education Services Specialist RueZalia Watkins noted: “This huge news for families who have children in the criminal justice system. For years, youth considered too old for juvenile justice services have been incarcerated with adults. Raising the age allows for these youth to not be sent to adult prisons but rather, juvenile justice facilities where mental health treatment may be more readily available along with support, education and rehabilitation services.”
