You don’t have to wait for a crisis to reach out or to share help with someone else.
Whatever someone is facing is reason enough to reach out. And whatever reason you have to pass it along, that’s reason enough too.
Connection is prevention, and every share is a chance to put help within someone’s reach when they need it.
Vibrant Emotional Health has served as the administrator of the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline since its inception, working with SAMHSA, state and territory partners, tribal nations, and community organizations to keep 988 running compassionately and effectively, 24/7, 365 days a year, across a network of more than 200 contact centers nationwide.
988 gives everyone a simple three-digit number to reach a skilled, compassionate counselor by call, text, or chat for immediate, confidential, and compassionate support.
Why Sharing Matters
Research examining suicide mortality after the launch of 988 estimated approximately 4,372 fewer suicide deaths among people ages 15–34 between July 2022 and December 2024, especially in states that actively invested in the service.
While correlation does not prove causation, the findings underscore the importance of ensuring people know about and can access crisis support when they need it. That’s what makes sharing 988 one of the most powerful things anyone can do. You don’t need special training or the perfect words—just a willingness to pass along a number that could change someone’s life. The most recent NAMI/IPSOS poll shows that 74% of Americans are aware of 988, but we can’t, and won’t, stop there.
