You don’t have to wait for a crisis to reach out or to share help with someone else.

Whatever someone is facing is reason enough to reach out. And whatever reason you have to pass it along, that’s reason enough too.

Connection is prevention, and every share is a chance to put help within someone’s reach when they need it.

Vibrant Emotional Health has served as the administrator of the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline since its inception, working with SAMHSA, state and territory partners, tribal nations, and community organizations to keep 988 running compassionately and effectively, 24/7, 365 days a year, across a network of more than 200 contact centers nationwide.

988 gives everyone a simple three-digit number to reach a skilled, compassionate counselor by call, text, or chat for immediate, confidential, and compassionate support.

Why Sharing Matters

Research examining suicide mortality after the launch of 988 estimated approximately 4,372 fewer suicide deaths among people ages 15–34 between July 2022 and December 2024, especially in states that actively invested in the service.

While correlation does not prove causation, the findings underscore the importance of ensuring people know about and can access crisis support when they need it. That’s what makes sharing 988 one of the most powerful things anyone can do. You don’t need special training or the perfect words—just a willingness to pass along a number that could change someone’s life. The most recent NAMI/IPSOS poll shows that 74% of Americans are aware of 988, but we can’t, and won’t, stop there.

988 Day is 9/8

Every year on 9/8, communities across the country mark 988 Day to raise awareness of the Lifeline and the ongoing need for mental health support. The 2026 theme is, “988 Reasons: Your reason is reason enough,” reminds us that you don’t have to be in crisis to reach out to 988. Whatever you’re facing, big or small, your reason for seeking support is reason enough to call/text 988 or chat 988lifeline.org. This is a great opportunity to share the number and show your support.

Ways to get involved include:

National Suicide Prevention Month

When people feel seen, supported, and connected, they are better able to build healthy relationships at home, work, school, and within their communities.

Our 2026 National Suicide Prevention Month campaign is built around our philosophy that suicide prevention begins long before a moment of crisis.

Vibrant is committed to designing the systems, partnerships, and community infrastructure that make mental health support easier to find, easier to remember, and easier to trust—because we know that help only works if people can reach it.

You are not alone.
