Creating spaces where people feel seen, supported, and a sense of belonging is essential.

People are more likely to reach out, stay engaged in care, and continue healing when they feel represented, understood, and connected to those around them.

Every person’s identity, culture, family, language, and life experiences shape how they experience mental health and what helps them feel safe enough to ask for support.

Behavioral health care is never one-size-fits-all, and meaningful support—before, during, and after crisis—begins by meeting people where they are. Community-informed care shapes everything we do at Vibrant. We partner with people who bring lived experience and community expertise to their work each day.

“Sometimes the most powerful intervention isn’t a technique. It’s recognition.”

– Dr. Jantra Coll, PsyD, VP of Community Programs & Damon Watson, MPH, LPC, Program Director of The Fellowship Initiative

Be Seen

Support is most effective when people feel understood by those around them. Across Vibrant’s community programs, trusted adults, peer support specialists, and community partners build relationships that help people feel connected long before a crisis occurs.

Whether it’s a teacher helping a young person find stability at the Adolescent Skills Center, a peer specialist supporting LGBTQIA+ youth and families through the Queens Affirming Youth and Family Alliance, or creating spaces like Our Vibe Check where conversations about young people’s mental health flows naturally, belonging grows through relationships built on trust. Shared identity doesn’t replace clinical expertise. It strengthens connection, deepens trust, and helps people stay engaged in care.

“… it’s about building foundation and stability, not to the community, but with the community.”

– Dr. Cara A. McNulty, CEO, Vibrant Emotional Health

Be Understood

Belonging means people don’t just receive care. They help shape it.

Vibrant believes the people closest to a challenge are essential to creating better solutions. Through initiatives like the Coordinated Care Services Initiative’s Youth Advisory Council and Borough-Based Councils, people with lived experience help influence the programs, services, and systems designed to support their communities.

When communities help build behavioral health care, services become more responsive, more trusted, and more effective.

Some ways that organizations can invest in belonging include:

•   Organizational cultures that treat lived experience as evidence-based practice

•   Pipelines for clinicians of color

•   Leadership pathways for culturally grounded providers

•   Metrics that measure trust and engagement, not just service volume

When people feel seen, understood, and connectedthey’re more likely to ask for help before a crisis, stay engaged in care, and continue on their journeys long after the immediate moment has passed. Belonging isn’t simply the result of good care. It helps make good care possible.

National Suicide Prevention Month

National Suicide Prevention Month

When people feel seen, supported, and connected, they are better able to build healthy relationships at home, work, school, and within their communities.

Our 2026 National Suicide Prevention Month campaign is built around our philosophy that suicide prevention begins long before a moment of crisis.

Vibrant is committed to designing the systems, partnerships, and community infrastructure that make mental health support easier to find, easier to remember, and easier to trust—because we know that help only works if people can reach it.
